About Beer & Brewer Awards

Launched in 2010 the Beer & Brewer Awards are run by Beer & Brewer magazine to recognise venues, beer, cider, whisk(e)y, homebrew can kits, brewers and businesses for their excellence.

31 categories were awarded including Best Beer Venue, Best Small Bar/Pub, Best Bottleshop (less than 300 beers), Best Beertender, Best Beer (Local), Best Beer (Imported), Brewer of the Year and many more.

The Awards are split into two parts, one for People’s Choice Awards, as voted for by the readers of Beer & Brewer magazine, with the most votes winning, and the second is the main section of the Beer & Brewer Awards, as decided by a Judging Panel which takes into account voting from readers, writers, best sellers from the hospitality trade, suppliers and for some categories awards a beer has won in other awards.

A Presenter Dinner was held on Tuesday 25^th October at The Sebel Hotel, Sydney. During the day a Trade Show was held at the Hotel, providing sponsors and suppliers the opportunity to network with finalists and the hospitality and brewing trade. Forums were conducted during the day, including the a Retail Trade session on getting craft beer to market in bottleshops, and a second for the Brewing Trade on the challenges of starting and running a brewery.

Criteria:

1. Being Nominated by brewery suppliers in the industry. Suppliers for Australia & New Zealand included NZ Hops, BeerNZ, Cryer Malt, Bintani, Hopco, Lancer Beer Systems, O-I, all supplying their Top 10 list of brewers.

2. Aggregate of number of beers nominated and position voted in, for the Best Beer Award category, which is contributed to by Retail Trade (best sellers from one bottleshop and one brewery per state which are one of the best beer venues in that state), one Beer & Brewer magazine writer (or guest writer) per state.

3. Awards won for beers the brewer has brewed from gold medals to trophy's. Awards included for Australia include Australian International Beer Awards, Perth Royal Beer Show, Royal Adelaide Beer Show, Sydney Royal Beer Competition, International Beer Challenge. Packaging awards are not taken into consideration.

4. A brewer is only eligible to win the award when they have been listed in at least two of the above three criteria.

5. When a beer has been nominated, the head brewer who is responsible for signing off the brew on a day to day basis has been listed as the brewer. We recognise a team of brewers are ultimately responsible for the beer in some cases and the team should share in the success.

2. Beer & Brewer magazine readers, via the People's Choice Award results
3. Retail Trade - beer buyers from pubs, bars, bottleshops, listing their top sellers and most rated beers, cider,s whiskies
4. Awards - success of winning a trophy or gold medal in 2011 is counted towards the final results.
5. Only beers that are available in Australia or New Zealand are eligible to win the Best Beer category.
